Identifying Author Bias and Comparing Informational/Narrative Passages
Being able to identify an author’s bias is an important skill in today’s technological world. Two separate lessons are included in the Teacher’s Guide. Students will read an exciting informational passage about how our national anthem came to be penned after the British attacked Fort McHenry during the War of 1812. After learning to identify author bias, students will enjoy reading a historical fiction narrative about Grace Wisher, an indentured servant who helped make the “star-spangled banner” on which Francis Scott Key kept his eyes fixed during the harrowing night of the attack. By comparing the historical fiction to the informational passage, students learn to differentiate between fact and fiction but also learn to allow themselves to imagine history.
Vocabulary and Comprehension
Vocabulary worksheets use sentences with context clues so students can practice the skill of using context clues to learn passage vocabulary before reading. Comprehension worksheets ask rigorous questions that encourage students to cite evidence. Worksheets can be printed to be completed by hand or use the separate fillable worksheets in a Google classroom to complete online. Answer keys are provided in the Teacher’s Guide.
Teacher’s Guide
A 35-page comprehensive Teacher’s Guide provides a summary of the passages, background information, and explicit instructions for facilitating the lesson will little preparation.
Extension Activities
Each lesson contains Extension Activities that give students opportunities to further explore the War of 1812 and historical fiction through different learning modalities including research and creative writing.
